A beautiful pair of Woodmark, Mary Webb Wood "Tree of Life" embroidered wingback chairs in shades of blue and tan on a linen background. The back of chairs is upholstered in dark blue velvet. They were designed by Mary Webb Wood in the 1970s for Woodmark Originals, and each is embroidered with © MWW at the base of the backrest. Very comfortable and perfect for creating a sitting area in almost any room of your house. Comes with the four original matching fabric armrest covers.
This set is in worn vintage condition but still lovely. The fabric on these chairs is prone to yellowing in areas and that is evident on this set, as well as some sun fading, notable on the blue velvet sides, last 2 photos. See more information in Condition Notes. Priced accordingly, due to condition issues.
From Mary Webb Wood's booklet, A Woodmark Original Crewel: "These crewels are being hand worked in the Vale of Kashmir, high in the Himalayan Mountains, by experienced Indian artists and craftsmen. The background cloth is handmade there, and will not be as perfect as machine made fabrics... no two pieces will be precisely alike. There will be, inevitably, some variations in colors as the dye pots are refreshed, and some small changes in the interpretation of the parts. The background tones may vary, since the embroidered cloth must be carried out into the river for its final washing."
Condition Notes:
Wear consistent with age and use. The pair is strong and the upholstery has been steamcleaned. The upholstery does show wear; this set is not perfect. The seat covers and armrest covers were soaked in Oxyclean and are therefore bright and white. The body of the chair was steamcleaned with Oxyclean however they did not brighten as much. The fabric on these chairs is prone to yellowing in areas and that is evident on this set, as well as some sun fading, notable on the sides, see 10th and 11th photo. Wear from use is evident on the piping on the front edge of each seat cushion is evident, along with small repairs. Wool crewel embroidery is intact but worn in places from use.
