A beautiful oil on canvas painting of a winter landscape with an old mill that has been reframed in a modern frame with a linen liner. The painting is an appealing scene of a creekside snowy path that leads up to a grist mill surrounded by trees and a field. A red barrel sits in front of the mill and two birds are in the sky. The painting is signed M. Thompson and dated 1837 in the bottom right corner. On the back of the painting, on the bottom stretcher bar, it is inscribed, "Old Mill Near Hergarmney". Research has not yielded any information on M. Thompson or the village of Hergarmney. The canvas is in the style of 19th century British landscape painting, or perhaps this could be an American painting. From an Aspen, Colorado estate. The outer edge of the frame measures 27.5"H x 37.75"W x 1.75"D. The canvas measures 20"H x 30"W x 1"D. Condition commensurate with age and use with fine craquelure in the surface varnish of the painting. The painting appears to be in original condition. No significant losses or imperfections in the canvas. Note the condition of the back of the painting with two small patches. The modern frame adequately protects the old canvas and could be hung as is, or reframe in a more period appropriate frame.
