A beautiful watercolor or gouache painting of a mountainous landscape in the background with a house and mill on the side of a lake or pond in the foreground. A small blue rowboat catches your eye at the bottom center. Clearly created by a skilled artist the painting is signed in the lower left J.W. Spaveil June 11, 1886. Because of the ordering of the date we assume this is an American painting. The signature is difficult to read and is open to interpretation! The painting itself measures 9" x 6.75". The new maple frame measures 16.25" x 13.75" x 1". The paper is clearly very yellowed from age but the paint and brushwork is still very much intact and charming. The painting has been newly framed with a tan map, new glass and a maple frame. It is ready to hang and enjoy.
