A gorgeous antique Japanese two piece kitchen tansu chest (Goshu Mizuya) from the late Meiji period. This stunning tansu from the Kansai region, is so unique in that it is made of elm and cedar wood with persimmon accent panels featuring five drawers between four sliding doors. The large sliding door panels are made of solid vertical strips of elm/zelkova wood with bookmatched horizontal accent panels of persimmon wood. All of the drawer fronts are made of figured elm with hand made iron handles - all original with the exception of the small hinged door knob which is a replacement. The upper and lower inside spaces are not divided, it's just one big open storage area with long removable cedar shelves. All drawers and doors are smooth gliding, making this piece exceptionally functional. Overall measurements: 69.5"H x 66.75"W x 26"D
This tansu dismantles into two sections making it easy to move into any room of your house! Condition commensurate with age and use. The wood and finishes on this tansu are in good condition considering they are over 100 years old! Small imperfections in the wood can be noted. No major stains or scratches on the front. The side panels have small gaps from shrinking and one 1/2" split in the lower right side. Missing a 5" wide backboard on the upper half.
