A gorgeous and unique antique early 19th century, or late 18th century, Dutch Colonial (now Indonesia) writing desk expertly crafted out of teak in the baroque style featuring oversized, eye-catching cabriole legs and finished with a black lacquer, now abraded from centuries of use. The back scalloped gallery has two corner shelves, likely for setting writing implements or candles. The serpentine front drawer is carved from one piece of teak, as is typical of Indonesian craftsmanship. Perhaps this was a desk used by an employee of the Dutch East India Company, as it is crafted out of teak, a native hardwood, but in a very Dutch European style. Measures 37.5"H x 29"W x 24"D overall (including the back gallery) Writing surface sits 31" from the floor. The knee space, from the bottom of the drawer to the floor, is 24.5". Condition commensurate with age and use. Upon close examination of the lower legs this desk once had an "X" shaped stretcher that was removed at some point in time. The finish appears to be the original waxed finish and is mostly black with significant surface scratches and abrasions which add to the historic charm of this piece.
