A beautiful and highly functional antique Japanese Isho Tansu chest that was traditionally used for storing clothing, particularly Kimonos. Constructed in the Taisho Era (1912-1926) out of Keyaki (elm) wood on the front and Paulownia (kiri) wood for the casework, this tansu disassembles into 3 lightweight sections making it easy to move anywhere in your house. The grain in the elm wood on the front of the tansu is exceptional with gorgeous graining. Note the inverted triangle designs at the center of each long drawer that adds visual interest and demonstrates the skill of the woodworker who created this stunning piece.
The upper section has two doors (with three drawers inside), two sliding doors (that conceal an open compartment), and three small drawers. The center section has three long drawers while the bottom section has two long drawers. All drawers and doors glide easily. The tansu is accented with beautiful copper drawer and door pulls, key escutcheons, and recessed finger pulls for opening and closing the sliding doors.
Overall measurements when assembled: 68.25"H x 48.5"W x 18.5"D. Top section is 24.5" tall; the middle section is 24" tall, the bottom section is 19.75" tall.
The sections can be used stacked as shown, or individually in different rooms of your house.
Condition commensurate with age and use. Random very small scratches and imperfections in the wood, most notable on the side of the cabinet. The structure of this cabinet is sound and sturdy and suitable for daily use. The three sections stack easily and small pegs emanating from the top of each section hold the stack in place. Very minor, stable panel separation in bottom left side but it is not loose and does not affect the structural integrity of this piece. The finish on this tansu appears to be original and copper hardware has original patina.
