An interesting piece of southern USA history... a watercolor and pencil illustration of a Trenton, Alabama campsite with members of the Thornton family. Created by an artist just after the reconstruction era in Alabama, dated March 1, 1880.
Inscriptions read:
JM [monogram mark, difficult to dicipher] 3.1.80
Camp Thornton - Loffont [?] Mtn. in the distance
Trenton Ala.
Tony - Jim Thornton [two men seated together]
Jory Overland [lower right, artist?]
Pearson Thornton [written next to the African American figure on the left]
Beautifully matted and mounted in a birds eye maple frame.
Frame measurements are 15.75"H x 12.75"W
Illustration measurements are 5 inches square. See last photo of the illustration unframed. It appears it was cut out of a larger sketchbook.
In as found condition, ready to hang. Framed in a modern birds eye maple frame behind glass. Matting around the illustration is acid-free. Close up photos provided are of the illustration unframed, so as to provide clarity.
