This absolutely stunning antique Spanish Colonial articulated santos sculpture (bulto) stands almost 4' tall and was sculpted out of lightweight wood covered in papier-mache, then painted, in either the 19th century or late 18th century in the Philipppines. This figure is most likely a Virgin Mary. Note her beautiful embedded blue glass eyes and the delicate positioning of her hands, which perhaps held a baby Jesus at one time. Her torso is painted a muted blue green. There are holes along her hairline indicating that she once wore a wig. Her arms and legs move freely. The sculpture itself measures 45.5 inches tall while the base adds another 1" of height. In good stable antique condition. She is structurally sound and mounted on a wood and metal modern base. The painted surface certainly shows well over 100 years of age but that adds to the charm of this piece. A sought after piece for a collector of Spanish Colonial art or stunning as simply a decorative object. Other examples of large articulated santos exist in private collections and museums but little is known about them other than they were posed and dressed in clothing in a church setting. Because these figures are so lightweight they may have been used in processions to mark holidays in the Catholic church calendar.
